What is "Multicultural Psychotherapy"?

Multicultural therapy takes into consideration many aspects of one’s social classification such as, but not limited to, racial/ethnic, gender, spiritual/religious, orientation, disabilities, age and class identities. It is sensitive to the history and unique experiences of the historically disenfranchised or oppressed peoples of our society. In this approach, the culturally competent therapist must also weigh in as to when and how a person’s problems or issues relate to or are mediated by cultural factors, as not all problems are necessarily related to or best treated by emphasizing culture.

The effects of discrimination based on these divisions or identities have devastating consequences to both the victims and the perpetrators of the mistreatment. Feelings of guilt, fear, shame, anger, resentment, depression, anxiety, loneliness, hopelessness or confusion often lead to maladaptive ways of coping. Common outcomes that result from these feelings are substance use, various forms of addictions, isolation, violence and sometimes death.

If you are having difficulty coping with these issues and are experiencing negative thoughts and feelings about them, or you would like to know more about multicultural topics, let’s talk. I’m available for individual, couples and family therapy, and consultation.
